About Caroma
Caroma is one of Australia’s most iconic bathware brands, founded in 1941 in Norwood, Adelaide by Charles Rothauser and his wife Roma — the brand name combines their first names. Today Caroma is owned by GWA Group (ASX-listed, headquartered in Alexandria, Sydney), and its products are Australian-designed and engineered, then manufactured to Caroma’s specification in Malaysia, China and Europe.
In its 80+ year history, Caroma has been responsible for several genuine world-firsts in bathware:
- 1956 — First one-piece plastic cistern (FH Edwards Laurel award)
- 1980 — World’s first dual-flush toilet (9L / 4.5L), eventually mandated across Australia and credited with saving ~32,000 litres per household per year
- 1994 — 6L / 3L dual-flush cistern, the basis for modern Australian toilet standards
- 2005 — Smartflush® 4.5L technology — first WELS 5-star rated toilet suite
- 2009 — Invisi® Series II — Australian International Design Award
- 2016 — CleanFlush® rimless flushing technology — Good Design Award
The Caroma range is WaterMark certified and WELS rated for water efficiency, frequently sitting at the highest WELS ratings available in its respective categories.

What makes Caroma different
A few technical features worth knowing about when comparing Caroma against cheaper imported brands:
- Tapware Engine™ — Caroma’s name for the integrated ceramic disc cartridge, aerator and ultra-flex pex hose unit inside every Caroma mixer. Backed by a 10-year Tapware Engine™ warranty.
- CleanFlush® rimless toilet bowls — fully glazed vitreous china bowl with no concealed flushing rim, eliminating the hardest-to-clean area of a traditional toilet pan.
- Smartflush® water efficiency — the engineering that made Caroma the first manufacturer to achieve WELS 5-star and WELS 6-star ratings on toilet suites and urinals respectively.
- Invisi® in-wall cisterns — concealed cisterns designed and serviceable to Australian plumbing standards.
- PVD coloured finishes — physical vapour deposition coatings on PVD-finished tapware (Brushed Brass, Brushed Nickel, Gunmetal), backed by a 5-year PVD finish warranty.
