Stone Tops

Why stone over ceramic
A ceramic top is lighter on price and simple to clean around the bowl, and for a guest bathroom that is often enough. Stone earns its extra cost in a main bathroom or ensuite: it resists heat marks from a straightener, it is not going to chip at the edge the way a glaze can, and it takes an undermount basin, which ceramic will not. It also gives you the option of a longer bench with a single bowl, which ceramic tops rarely offer.

Choosing a colour
Veined stone in marble and travertine reads as warmer and hides everyday marks better than a flat colour. Solid whites and greys give a cleaner line and suit a bathroom where the vanity front or the tiling is doing the visual work. Look at samples under the lighting you will actually have — bathroom downlights render stone very differently to showroom lighting or a photograph.

Ordering
Stone tops are matched to a specific cabinet width and tap hole configuration, so the top and the vanity need to be ordered together. Decide the tap arrangement first, since a wall-mounted mixer means no hole in the stone at all and a change of mind afterwards is not a small job.
