About basin mixers
A basin mixer is the single-lever tap that sits on the basin or vanity top and controls both flow and temperature with one hand. Standard-height mixers suit inset, semi-inset and under-counter basins where the rim sits close to the bench. Tall (or high-rise) mixers are made for above-counter vessel basins, lifting the outlet high enough to clear the bowl. Medium-height mixers sit between the two and suit low-profile vessels and semi-inset basins with a raised rim.
Australian basin mixers carry a WELS star rating; 5 and 6 star models use 4 to 6 litres a minute, which is plenty for handwashing and cuts hot water use noticeably over a year. Cold start mixers open on cold water when the lever is centred, so the hot water system is not called unless you deliberately move the lever, another small saving on every use.
Finish drives most of the decision. Chrome is still the safest match for existing fittings; matte black and brushed nickel are the current favourites in Perth renovations; urban brass, brushed copper and gun metal give a warmer or moodier look and are best matched across the whole room, from the basin mixer to the shower, towel rail and accessories. Fienza offers the same finish names across its ranges, which makes that easy.
