A shower mixer with diverter does two jobs from one trim — sets the water temperature with the lever, and routes water between two outlets with the diverter. This is the standard setup for a twin shower system where you have both a fixed overhead rain shower and a handheld on an adjustable rail, and you want to switch between (or run both at once on some diverter models). The alternative is a separate mixer + separate diverter top, which gives more flexibility on layout but adds a second visible component to the wall.
