Esta Freestanding Bath

Description

The Esta Freestanding Bath is a classic oval tub that stands clear of the walls on a slim base. The outside is a smooth, continuous curve in gloss white, and the inside is a soft oval with a gentle slope at both ends, so there is a comfortable backrest whichever way you lie. It is the shape most people picture when they think of a freestanding bath, and it works in a traditional bathroom as well as a modern one.

It comes in two lengths. The 1500mm is 740mm wide and suits ensuites and family bathrooms where floor space is tight. The 1700mm is 800mm wide with a longer bathing well, and it makes a proper centrepiece in a main bathroom. Both are 580mm high with a 450mm deep bathing well, so the water depth is the same and the choice comes down to floor space and leg room. The shell is reinforced acrylic, which holds heat well and is light enough to carry through a doorway, and the 50mm centre waste connects through the floor.

Planning for a freestanding bath

A freestanding bath needs room around it, not just under it. Allow at least 100mm between the bath and any wall so the outside can be cleaned and the floor mopped, and more on the side you climb in from. In a small room a back to wall bath, which sits flat against one wall, is often the better use of space; the Esta is for rooms where the bath can sit away from the walls and be seen from all sides.

The plumbing goes through the floor. The waste sits under the centre of the bath, so the drain has to be roughed in to match the drawing before the floor is tiled, and there needs to be a way to get to the trap afterwards. The tap is usually a floor standing bath mixer beside the bath or a wall mounted spout on the nearest wall.

Acrylic is the right material for a bath like this. It is warm to touch, holds the heat of the water, and a reinforced shell like the Esta’s stays rigid when full. Clean it with a soft cloth and a non abrasive bathroom cleaner and it will keep its gloss for years.
