Description
In an accessible toilet the wall beside the pan is often the only place for a rail, and a fixed rail can get in the way of side transfers. The Metlam Click-Lock Drop Down Grab Rail with Toilet Roll Holder folds up out of the way when it is not needed and drops down to give support when it is. The toilet roll sits on the rail itself, so the user can reach it without twisting or stretching. It suits accessible toilets in hospitals, aged care, shopping centres and offices, as well as home bathrooms set up for a family member with limited mobility.
The rail is made from grade 304 stainless steel with 32mm diameter, 1.2mm wall tubing and seamless welds. A click-lock system holds the rail in position so it can’t slide down unexpectedly, and the unit is universal, so the same product works for left or right hand installation. It is surface mounted with visible fixings. Choose satin stainless steel for a low-glare commercial look or polished stainless steel for a brighter finish.

Choosing a grab rail
Grab rails give support where people sit, stand and turn: beside the toilet, inside the shower and next to the bath. Straight rails suit ambulant cubicles, showers and general support. 90 degree rails combine a horizontal and a vertical grip for sitting down and getting up. Drop down rails fold out of the way so an accessible toilet stays clear for wheelchair transfers. Accessible and ambulant toilets in Australian public and commercial buildings are designed to AS 1428.1, which sets rail positions, a 30 to 40mm tube diameter and the gap between rail and wall.
Fixing matters as much as the rail. Concealed-fix flanges hide the screws for a neater, tamper-resistant finish, and every rail must go into studs, noggins or solid masonry that can carry the load. Satin stainless steel is the hard-wearing standard for hospitals, aged care, schools and offices; matte black suits homes and boutique commercial fit-outs where the rail should look like part of the design.
