Description
Where a shower only has room for a single upright rail, a vertical kit gives the user both a handhold and an adjustable shower position on the same fitting. The Metlam Vertical Shower Grab Rail Kit pairs a straight vertical grab rail with a hand shower, so the outlet can be set for a seated or standing user while the rail provides support when stepping in, turning or getting up. It suits accessible and ambulant showers in hospitals, aged care homes, hotels and disability housing, and makes sense in a home bathroom renovation planned for ageing in place.
The grab rail is grade 304 stainless steel with a satin stainless steel finish, which is easy to clean and does not show water marks as much as a polished surface. The shower kit has a chrome and grey finish. The rail is concealed fixed with 78mm diameter mounts for a tidy look with no exposed screw heads. As a kit, the rail and shower are supplied together, which keeps ordering simple for builders and facility managers.

Choosing a grab rail
Grab rails give support where people sit, stand and turn: beside the toilet, inside the shower and next to the bath. Straight rails suit ambulant cubicles, showers and general support. 90 degree rails combine a horizontal and a vertical grip for sitting down and getting up. Drop down rails fold out of the way so an accessible toilet stays clear for wheelchair transfers. Accessible and ambulant toilets in Australian public and commercial buildings are designed to AS 1428.1, which sets rail positions, a 30 to 40mm tube diameter and the gap between rail and wall.
Fixing matters as much as the rail. Concealed-fix flanges hide the screws for a neater, tamper-resistant finish, and every rail must go into studs, noggins or solid masonry that can carry the load. Satin stainless steel is the hard-wearing standard for hospitals, aged care, schools and offices; matte black suits homes and boutique commercial fit-outs where the rail should look like part of the design.
