Description
The Metlam U-Shaped Grab Rail gives three grip positions in one fitting, and it also allows for a hand shower to be mounted on it, which makes it a practical all-in-one rail for accessible showers in aged care, hospitals, hotels and homes.
It is made from grade 304 stainless steel with a 32mm diameter tube and an unobstructed hand passage along the full length, so a hand can slide along without hitting a bracket. Metlam states it can withstand a force of 1,100N applied in any direction without deformation, loosening or rotation. The modular design makes it easier to assemble, transport and store, and the height can be cut down on site to suit the room. It surface mounts with concealed fixings and is finished in satin stainless steel.

Choosing a grab rail
Grab rails give support where people sit, stand and turn: beside the toilet, inside the shower and next to the bath. Straight rails suit ambulant cubicles, showers and general support. 90 degree rails combine a horizontal and a vertical grip for sitting down and getting up. Drop down rails fold out of the way so an accessible toilet stays clear for wheelchair transfers. Accessible and ambulant toilets in Australian public and commercial buildings are designed to AS 1428.1, which sets rail positions, a 30 to 40mm tube diameter and the gap between rail and wall.
Fixing matters as much as the rail. Concealed-fix flanges hide the screws for a neater, tamper-resistant finish, and every rail must go into studs, noggins or solid masonry that can carry the load. Satin stainless steel is the hard-wearing standard for hospitals, aged care, schools and offices; matte black suits homes and boutique commercial fit-outs where the rail should look like part of the design.
