Description
A backrest gives support to people who cannot sit unaided on a toilet, and it is a standard part of many accessible toilet fit-outs. The Metlam Backrest is a padded model with a white PVC pad on a stainless steel frame, suited to aged care rooms, hospital bathrooms, accessible toilets in offices and clubs, and home bathrooms adapted for a family member.
The tube and mounts are grade 304 stainless steel, and the unit surface mounts with concealed fixings. It measures 158mm high, 605mm wide and 442mm deep. The pad height adjusts by 20mm and the depth by 100mm, so it can be set to suit the toilet. The frame comes in satin stainless steel or matte black (Metlam Designer Black). Spare parts include the MLR119_PAD pad, MLR119_FIXINGS pad fixings and the MLR119_WALLBRACKET arm mount with wall mounting plate.

Choosing a grab rail
Grab rails give support where people sit, stand and turn: beside the toilet, inside the shower and next to the bath. Straight rails suit ambulant cubicles, showers and general support. 90 degree rails combine a horizontal and a vertical grip for sitting down and getting up. Drop down rails fold out of the way so an accessible toilet stays clear for wheelchair transfers. Accessible and ambulant toilets in Australian public and commercial buildings are designed to AS 1428.1, which sets rail positions, a 30 to 40mm tube diameter and the gap between rail and wall.
Fixing matters as much as the rail. Concealed-fix flanges hide the screws for a neater, tamper-resistant finish, and every rail must go into studs, noggins or solid masonry that can carry the load. Satin stainless steel is the hard-wearing standard for hospitals, aged care, schools and offices; matte black suits homes and boutique commercial fit-outs where the rail should look like part of the design.
