Description
The dropped arm version of Metlam’s vandal resistant backrest is taller, at 227mm high, than the standard MLR119_VP model, giving a different pad position for the installation. It is built for accessible toilets that see heavy use or little supervision, such as train stations, sports grounds, public parks, schools and shopping centres.
The kit includes one MLR119CMKII backrest and one VP_PAD vandal resistant pad, made from grade 304 stainless steel in a satin stainless steel finish. It measures 227mm high, 605mm wide and 448mm deep, and surface mounts with concealed fixings. The pad height adjusts by 20mm and the depth by 100mm. If a pad is damaged it can be replaced with a VP_PAD spare, and the MLR119_WALLBRACKET arm mount, including the wall mounting plate, is also sold separately.

Choosing a grab rail
Grab rails give support where people sit, stand and turn: beside the toilet, inside the shower and next to the bath. Straight rails suit ambulant cubicles, showers and general support. 90 degree rails combine a horizontal and a vertical grip for sitting down and getting up. Drop down rails fold out of the way so an accessible toilet stays clear for wheelchair transfers. Accessible and ambulant toilets in Australian public and commercial buildings are designed to AS 1428.1, which sets rail positions, a 30 to 40mm tube diameter and the gap between rail and wall.
Fixing matters as much as the rail. Concealed-fix flanges hide the screws for a neater, tamper-resistant finish, and every rail must go into studs, noggins or solid masonry that can carry the load. Satin stainless steel is the hard-wearing standard for hospitals, aged care, schools and offices; matte black suits homes and boutique commercial fit-outs where the rail should look like part of the design.
